HARP is a local voluntary sector organisation providing services to people in Manchester. We are committed to improving the lives of people with mental health needs.
Vision
All people with mental health needs in Manchester live a life free from poverty and are able to contribute and flourish in society.
Why is this our vision? Manchester has one of the highest incidence of mental ill health in the country. Factors like poverty, poor housing, debt, isolation, unemployment, disadvantage and discriminationall make a significant contirbution to poor mental health. Many people with poor mental health live in poor housing, live in poverty, experience debt and have few social contacts. Many suffer from poor physical health and are denied access to appropriate treatment and support.
HARP understands the impact of these factors on mental health. We have an established history of providing advice and advocacy to people affected by poor mental health and poverty. We are working hard to make sure that people are free from debt, have their income maximised and live in decent affordable housing.
Aims
1. Promoting a positive approach to mental health.
2. Putting individuals at the centre of service development, delivery and care planning.
3. Raising the voice and valuing the experience of service users.
4. Enabling people with mental health needs to improve their quality of life and fulfil their potential.
5. Empowering people with mental health needs to live successfully in their communities.
6. Challenging stereotypes and discrimination.
7. Developing and delivering innovative and proven practice in the mental health field in partnership with other agencies.
Values
Everyone is entitled to a full, satisfying and dignified life, free from stigma and discrimination. Our services therefore aim to be: client-centred, empowering, de-stigmatising, non-judgemental, accessible, flexible and inclusive.
HARP has been around since 1989 and has built a solid reputation in Manchester as a provider of services to people with mental health problems. We now have 36 dedicated and enthusiastic staff and 31 volunteers working for our five projects across Manchester. All our services try to help people take control over their lives, to feel empowered and to realise their dreams and ambitions.
At HARP we always listen to feedback from our service-users about the services we provide, how they can be improved and to involve them as volunteers or paid workers. We have a positive attitude towards employing people who have used or are using mental health services. We work towards the principle that everyone can recover with the right support, help and advice.
Our work is overseen by the Board of Trustees, who bring an enormous amount of skills and experience to HARP. Most of HARP's funding comes from statutory funders such as Manchester Joint Commissioning Team and the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. We also receive funds from trusts and companies.
